University of Edinburgh team develop new technology set to speed cancer diagnosis

A new imaging technology tool which detects key cells involved in the formation of secondary tumours, has been developed by researchers at the University of Edinburgh.

It is hoped the new type of chemical probe could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients.
As well as examining the cells involved in the development of secondary tumours – known as metastatic tumours – the probe can also help scientists track how the tumours are progressing.

The probe works by lighting up small groups of previously unseen immune cells called metastasis-associated macrophages, which help cancer cells form metastatic tumours.

The University of Edinburgh team says this approach will aid understanding of how different types of immune cells influence tumour development, either negatively or positively.

Chemical probes, are used by a range of medical disciplines and are at the forefront in the development of new drugs.

A primary cancer is defined as where a cancer starts.

If cancer cells then break away from the primary cancer, settling and growing in another part of the body, this new cancer growth is called secondary cancer.

Further development of the tool could help detection of tiny changes inside the body’s tissues, making it easier to spot when metastases are developing, researchers say.

Doctors could use the technology in the future to monitor how patients are responding to treatment, by directly tracking metastasis-associated macrophages that are found in tumours.

Dr Marc Vendrell, of the university’s centre for inflammation research, said that he hoped the new probe would speed up the development and availability of new treatments for secondary tumours.

“This is an important advance in our abilities to study the role that immune cells play in tumours.

“We hope that this new technology will accelerate the design of better therapies to halt the development of metastasis.”

Dr Takanori Kitamura, of the university’s MRC centre for reproductive health said: “This technology allows us to see how a specific type of immune cell affects how tumours grow.

Dr Kitamura added: “This advance will be important in improving patient diagnoses”

The study, which is published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, was funded by the European Commission, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust.

2 Arkansas Chemistry Professors Face Charges of Making Meth

It sounds like something from the award-winning former A.M.C. series “Breaking Bad”: The authorities charged two chemistry professors in Arkansas on Friday in connection with the production of methamphetamine.

The instructors, Terry D. Bateman, 45, and Bradley A. Rowland, 40, were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and using drug paraphernalia, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department said. Meth is a highly addictive drug that can be manufactured illegally with chemicals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mr. Bateman and Mr. Rowland are associate professors of chemistry at Henderson State University, a liberal arts school of about 3,500 students in Arkadelphia, about 70 miles southwest of Little Rock.

The professors went on administrative leave as of Oct. 11, Tina V. Hall, a university associate vice president of marketing and communications, said on Sunday.

Ms. Hall said that the school’s Reynolds Science Center had been closed on Oct. 8 because of “a report of an undetermined chemical odor.” Testing revealed an elevated presence of benzyl chloride in a lab, she said.

Benzyl chloride is used to produce certain dyes and pharmaceutical products, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Short-term effects from inhaling it include irritation of the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract.

“Benzyl chloride is an inexpensive and versatile chemical that is used to make many other useful drugs and molecules,” Eric E. Simanek, a professor of chemistry at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, said on Sunday.

Stephen J. Madison, who is on the chemistry faculty at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., said that benzyl chloride could be used to help make methamphetamine.

Henderson State University’s on-call environmental services company conducted remediation work in the building, which reopened on Oct. 29, Ms. Hall said.

HP board unanimously rejects Xerox’s bid to acquire the company

HP’s board of directors said Sunday that they unanimously rejected a proposal from Xerox to acquire the company, because the offer is not in the best interest of shareholders and would undervalue HP.

Xerox had offered HP $22 per share in its takeover bid for the company. The bid consists of 77% cash and 23% stock, or $17 in cash and 0.137 Xerox share for each HP share.

“In reaching this determination, the Board also considered the highly conditional and uncertain nature of the proposal, including the potential impact of outsized debt levels on the combined company’s stock,” the board wrote in a letter to John Visentin, Xerox’s CEO.

HP announced in October that it will cut between 7,000 and 9,000 jobs by the end of fiscal 2022 as part of a broader restructuring plan that it estimates will save $1 billion a year. The cuts would amount to nearly 16% of its 55,000 employees across the world, according to data from FactSet.

The software company is worth $29 billion and is over three times the size of Xerox, which makes printers and copiers, in terms of market cap.

“We note the decline of Xerox’s revenue from $10.2 billion to $9.2 billion (on a trailing 12-month basis) since June 2018, which raises significant questions for us regarding the trajectory of your business and future prospects,” the board wrote.

“In addition, we believe it is critical to engage in a rigorous analysis of the achievable synergies from a potential combination,” the board wrote. “With substantive engagement from Xerox management and access to diligence information on Xerox, we believe that we can quickly evaluate the merits of a potential transaction.”

HP was created after Hewlett-Packard separated its enterprise business — Hewlett Packard Enterprise — which sells data storage equipment and servers, among other things.

Activist investor Carl Icahn, who owns a 10.6% stake in Xerox, recently bought a $1.2 billion stake in HP. He was pushing for the merger of the two companies, as he believed that a combined company would be in the best interests of both sets of shareholders given the potential for cost savings and a balanced portfolio of printer options.
