QB Dak Prescott passes team to win over Detroit Lions

Published

on

DETROIT — The Dallas Cowboys own the NFL’s No. 1 offense and now they boast one of the league’s hottest quarterbacks.

Dak Prescott helped the Cowboys shake off a poor start with a career-best 284 yards in first-half passing yardage to lead them to a 35-27 win against the Detroit Lions.

The Cowboys needed all of Prescott’s yards because Lions backup quarterback Jeff Driskel kept his team in the game into the fourth quarter.

Here are three things we learned about the Cowboys from this game:

 1. Prescott peaking at right time:  With 444 yards and three touchdown passes against the Lions, Prescott has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and nine TDs over the past three weeks. On Sunday, he completed 29 of 46 attempts with no interceptions..

This is the third time he has thrown for more than 400 yards in a game this season. His season-best is 463 in a loss to Green Bay last month.

2. Cowboys would be much better if Elliott were soaring as well: This was the second consecutive week that top running back Ezekiel Elliott didn’t register 100 yards in a game, and Prescott threw for more than 300 yards. However, one of Prescott’s TD tosses went to Elliott.

Prescott also had touchdown passes to Randall Cobb (19 yards) and Tony Pollard (21 yards).

Elliott had 16 carries for 45 yards. That doesn’t mean he didn’t have fun. After his TD catch and run, he imitated the odd warmup dance Prescott does that was highlighted by NBC last week on Sunday Night Football.

3. Making the playoffs will take some work: The Cowboys should have had an easier time against the Lions who are playing without their No. 1 offensive weapon, Matthew Stafford (back).

The Lions, with  Driskel replacing Stafford at quarterback, had a first-quarter lead of 7-0 and led 14-10 in the second quarter.

That allows the Cowboys (6-4) to hold their tenuous lead in the NFC East. Regardless what happens later Sunday to the Eagles (5-4) against the New England Patriots, the Cowboys will continue to hold first place because of a head-to-head win against the Eagles.
