New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio Warns Half Of All New Yorkers Will Get Coronavirus

Published

on

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned his city tonight that half the population, more than 4 million New Yorkers, will get the coronavirus.

“It’s a fair bet to say that half of all New Yorkers and maybe more than half will end up contracting this disease,” de Blasio said at a City Hall press briefing about the outbreak.

New York City’s positive cases approached 18,000 with nearly 200 reported deaths, according to the New York Post. “That’s worrisome, very deeply worrisome,” he added.

De Blasio’s health commissioner, Dr. Oxiris Barbot, said the percentage could be even worse by the fall. “We think 50 percent by the end of this epidemic, this pandemic, so by the time September rolls around likely 50 percent, but it could also be much higher,” Dr. Barbot said.

De Blasio added that they have yet to identify the first person to bring it to NYC, even though officials had previously identified a Manhattan health care worker who’d returned from Iran as the first case in early March.

“We don’t even know truly when it first asserted here in the city,” de Blasio said.

He cautioned his citizens that 80 percent of people who contract the disease will have mild symptoms.

Barbot said there are currently “tens of thousands of New Yorkers” who’ve already contracted COVID-19 or been exposed to the contagious virus.

“That’s why it’s so important for people to stay home,” she said. “We don’t want all those people to be seeking health care at the same time.”

The city’s hospital system is nearing its breaking point with a shortage of beds and protective gear for its medical professionals.

The shortage of safety gear at Mount Sinai West in Manhattan is so dire that desperate nurses have resorted to wearing trash bags — and some blame the situation for the coronavirus death of a beloved colleague.

We’ll keep you posted on any updates.

How They’re Doing While Quarantined – Hollywood Life

All appears to be going well for Lady Gaga and her boyfriend Michael Polansky while the two quarantine together!

Shacking up never felt so good! Lady Gaga, 34, and her super handsome boyfriend Michael Polansky look to be doing A-OK during self-isolation with one another. “Stef (her real name) has been busy but still taking time to have wonderful downtime with Michael,” a source for HollywoodLife revealed EXCLUSIVELY on Sunday, April 5. “They are really getting to know each other more and this has been a really nice test to their relationship that they are embracing and learning from day by day. She seems pretty happy and chill right now.” The “Born This Way” singer posted a romantic shot of them cozied up together on Wednesday, March 18, where she dressed totally glam in a strapless black top and her blonde hair up while they held each other’s hands.

“It was an easy decision to self quarantine together because Gaga and Michael had already been inseparable before the stay at home order even began,” another HL insider dished. “Although they’ve only been dating for a few months, they obviously have such a strong connection. They love spending as much time together as they can so although this quarantine is not to be taken lightly and they’re doing their part to flatten the curve, they feel very lucky to have each other to lean on for support during a time like this.”

Michael could be the ultimate one for the legendary pop star after her relationships with Christian Carino and Taylor Kinney ended. “She’s serious about him, this is much more than a fling,” a friend of the singer told HL in February. “She’s already introduced him to her family and they really like him, they approve. She met him through mutual friends and there was an instant attraction between them. It’s more than just physical though, she’s very attracted to his mind, he’s brilliant.”

They continued, “He went to Harvard, which is impressive, but what’s even more impressive is that he’s devoted his whole career to philanthropy. That is such a passion of hers, so they’re really aligned there. It’s a great match on many levels.”

Los Angeles’ Mayor Is Offering ‘Rewards’ For Snitching On Businesses Violating The City’s Stay-At-Home Order

Finish this sentence, “snitches get ____.” In Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s words, “rewards” would fill in the blank as he’s encouraging people to rat on others who aren’t following the city’s stay-at-home order.

It’s a lot different from the saying we grew up knowing but apparently since the “safer at home” order in California was instituted, Los Angeles city officials have received multiple reports about businesses violating the order.

“If any non-essential businesses continue to operate in violation of the stay at home order, we’re going to act to enforce the safer at home order and ensure their compliance,” he said, according to CBS LA.

“You know the old expression about snitches, well in this case snitches get rewards,” Garcetti said. “We want to thank you for turning folks in and making sure we are all safe.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, Garcetti said business ambassadors had visited 540 businesses that had not complied with California’s Safer at Home order. Of those businesses, 144 were visited by officers with the Los Angeles Police Department to ensure compliance with the order.

Only four businesses have been referred to the city attorney’s office for misdemeanor filings.

Just as an update on coronavirus’ impact on LA, Garcetti says the city saw an 18% increase in coronavirus cases — 215 additional cases for a total of 1,386 — and Los Angeles county saw a 23% decrease in available hospital beds over the past two days.

“Your decision to stay home may mean that there’s one less person who needs a ventilator we do not have,” Garcetti said. “And bringing case and death numbers down won’t just happen because of physical distancing and isolation, but also because of testing.”

The city has conducted more than 10,000 tests, including 1,623 on Tuesday alone.

Roommates, what are your thoughts on Los Angeles’ new measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus? Let us know.
