Julie Taymor’s Gloria Steinem Biopic “The Glorias” Lands at LD Entertainment & Roadside Attractions

Published

on

“The Glorias” will hit theaters early this fall. LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions have scored domestic rights to Julie Taymor’s adaptation of Gloria Steinem’s 2015 memoir “My Life on the Road,” and are planning an awards-friendly release date. Variety confirmed the news.

Like “Frida,” Taymor’s 2002 biopic of artist Frida Kahlo, “The Glorias” takes an unconventional approach to telling its trailblazing subject’s story. The film sees a number of actresses playing Steinem, including Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander, to depict different periods in the activist’s life.

Lulu Wilson and Ryan Kiera Armstrong portray Steinem in her earlier years. The pic also includes representations of Dorothy Pitman Hughes (Janelle Monáe), Flo Kennedy (Lorraine Toussaint), Bella Abzug (Bette Midler), Dolores Huerta (Monica Sanchez), and Wilma Mankiller (Kimberly Guerrero), among others.

“Our most gratifying experiences have come from inspiring audiences with the authentic voices of historic female icons in films like ‘Jackie,’ ‘Judy,’ and now ‘The Glorias,’” said LD Entertainment’s Mickey Liddell. “Taymor’s imaginative vision, brought to life by the performances of Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander, honors Gloria’s pursuit to empower women from all walks of life.”

Roadside Attractions co-heads Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff added, “With ‘The Glorias,’ Julie Taymor and her extraordinary cast paint a commanding portrait of an American leader, the remarkable Gloria Steinem, and also salute the millions of amazing women who have fought alongside Gloria for social change during the last half-century.“We are incredibly energized to bring this epic story to theaters this fall.”

The release is being timed ahead of the 2020 election and will include “a national promotional tour backed by Steinem,” who will no doubt use the platform to advocate for candidates who value women’s rights.

“The Glorias” made its world premiere last month at Sundance. Taymor is among the project’s producers and penned the script alongside Sarah Ruhl.

Gaby Dellal to Direct Shark Pic “Something in the Water”

Cue the “Jaws” theme. Another shark pic will make beachgoers think twice before taking a dip. “Something in the Water,” a shark thriller directed by Gaby Dellal, is headed to the European Film Market. Studiocanal and Unstoppable Film & Television are producing. Deadline broke the news.

Penned by best-selling YA novelist Cat Clarke and based on her original idea, “Something in the Water” tells the story of five female pals “who come together to celebrate a wedding in a beautiful, remote location. One day before the wedding, as a treat, they go on a boat trip which descends into the stuff of nightmares,” the source hints.

“As well as being a brilliant thriller and a really good shark movie, this is a film about female friendship and there is a brilliant warmth and humor to the relationships between the women,” said Studiocanal UK CEO Nicola Shindler, who will produce the pic in-house. “The project attracted me because it’s as much a character piece as a thriller. The bond the women form before the shark attack is very important and is a real point of difference. That said, buyers are going to be very impressed by Cat Clarke’s concepts around the sharks themselves,” she teased.

“Something in the Water” is eyeing a shoot towards the end of this year, and casting discussions for the five friends are underway.

“3 Generations,” “Abandoned,” and “On a Clear Day” are among Dellal’s previous features.

Clarke’s novels include “We Are Young,” “Girlhood,” and “Undone.”

Roommates, Lizzo is known for going outside of the box when it comes to her style and sense of fashion—but her latest look at the recent Brit Awards may be her best look yet…and it’s all thanks to everyone’s favorite chocolate, Hershey’s.

Whether she’s baring it all for the ‘gram or glamming it up for the red carpet, Lizzo knows how to keep us talking and keep us guessing. During her recent appearance at the 2020 Brit Awards, Lizzo stepped out as a living chocolate bar with a fashionable twist.

She walked the red carpet wearing a full-length Hershey’s chocolate dress by designer Jeremy Scott for Moschino. The floor-length gown featured the well-known Hershey’s logo, complete with the product’s barcode and nutritional value.

Lizzo finished the look with a totally blinged-out, diamond encrusted Judith Leiber purse that resembled a chocolate bar. The handbag was also adorned with “100%,” which is of course, in regards to Lizzo’s chart-topping song “Truth Hurts.”

Over on her Instagram page, where she gushed about the fashion forward gown, she wrote the following caption:

“The best kind of chocolate. If you ever wondered what I taste like…”

Lizzo hair and make-up was also chocolate-inspired. She rocked a deep brown lip color, smoky brown eye and intensely bronzed cheeks. The tips of her diamond-filled nails were brown to match the dress as well. As for her hair, well it was beautifully styled in a double-stacked bun updo.

We see you Lizzo!
