Extreme Watchmaking – The New York Times

Published

on

BRAY, Ireland — Few watchmakers have to consider whether the vibrations from shelling or a bomb blast might affect timekeeping accuracy. But that kind of issue is just part of the planning for Graeme Haughton’s watches.

Mr. Haughton, 48, taught himself to make watches about 12 years ago, with help from the well-known Irish watchmaker John McGonigle. He initially created the Sea Air Sports brand — buying parts from suppliers and assembling the watches himself — and marketed them online as “indestructible watches for extreme sports.” (He also continued to work as a set electrician on movies and TV series, including episodes of “The Tudors” and “Primeval.”)

When sales took off, Mr. Haughton realized that military watch enthusiasts were snapping up the timepieces because the SAS logo matched the initials of the Special Air Service, an elite British military unit. Intrigued by the appeal, he then created Mileata, the Irish word for military, a line of mechanical timepieces designed to perform in the most hostile environments.

The models — which use movements made in Japan by Miyota, part of the Citizen watch group — now include the Protector with a black dial and black NATO strap, designed with law enforcement officers in mind, and the Defender, with a dark olive-green face, for armed forces personnel. Special order versions of the watches also are available in white, called the Sub-Zero, or brown, called Desert Warrior. Each sells for $800.

Mileata watches have crystals that are extra thin, to keep sand out, and shaped to minimize reflection. “If light blings off the dome, it could give a soldier’s position away and endanger his life,” Mr. Haughton said. The timepieces also have built-in antimagnetic protection to stop electrical activity or vibrations from affecting time-telling accuracy. Straps are welded on for security.

Mr. Haughton had United States Navy special operations personnel and bomb disposal experts test prototypes in Iraq and Afghanistan. “They loved them,” he said, “because these watches do what they say on the tin: They take a lot of abuse and they keep on ticking.”

But Mr. Haughton, who said he now sells “a couple of hundred watches a year,” has had to remortgage his house to fund the business. As a result, he plans to use Kickstarter next year to introduce a less expensive line, called the Q series, with prices starting at $550. The stainless steel mechanical pieces will have built-in compasses and 24-hour clock hands to monitor different time zones. “This is make or break for me,” he said.

Published

By

As Milan Fashion Week kicks off for the third leg of fashion month, a number of new shoe trends are already started taking shape on the runways in New York and London. We’ve already given you a preview of new fashion trends from asymmetrical sleeves to shearling coats and so-pretty jewel tones — not to mention some seriously unforgettable runway looks on the likes of Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Kaia Gerber — but in the shoe department, things are going in two clear directions: gritty, ’90s grunge, and ladylike styles with a vintage twist. We love us some good trend dichotomy.

From the return of the over-the-knee boot to vintage-inspired heels and chunky soles à la the early aughts, here are the biggest shoe trends from the Fall 2020 runways so far. Stay tuned as we continue to bring you more runways highlights from the Milan and Paris collections.
